Limited to just 1,200 units, BMW has revealed details of its first ever M3 CS. Set to hit the streets next year, the special edition model has been slimmed down, given more power and restyled.
Fitted with an M TwinPower Turbo technology six-cylinder in-line engine, the M3 CS develops 460ps at 6250rpm and will hit peak torque of 443 lb-ft from 4000rpm to 5380rpm. In comparison to the standard M3, this translates to a maximum output increase of 28ps and 37 lb-ft of torque. The result, 0-100km/h takes 3.7 seconds, while the top speed is electronically limited to 174 mph.
The 3.0-liter motor’s output can be attributed to the free-revving design of the M TwinPower Turbo technology, utilizing two mono-scroll turbochargers, which in combination with High Precision Direct Injection, Valvetronic variable valve lift and fully variable camshaft timing control ensure the six-cylinder unit delivers its power to maximum effect.
The closed-deck design of the six-cylinder engine’s crank case ensures it is rigid, paving the way for high cylinder pressures and effective power output. The sleeveless cylinder walls, with their twin-wire, arc-sprayed coating, help to save weight. Additionally, the forged crankshaft boasts a lightweight design yet high torsional strength. This keeps the rotating mass low and gives the twin-turbo power unit even quicker throttle response.
Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via the OEM’s 7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) with Drivelogic. Fast gear changes mean there is no power flow interruption.
Developed to deliver a blend of high performance and everyday practicality. The engineers at BMW M stripped back the M3 to enable the CS’ 110 lb weight loss. Thanks to swapping steel for carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), the hood is 25% lighter, and the roof is more than 13 lb lighter.
Orders for BMW’s M3 CS can be placed starting May 2018. While production of the high-performance sedan will be limited, around 550 units will arrive on US shores.
