Leading powertrain supplier Federal-Mogul has this week celebrated its components featuring in 11 of the 12 category winners of the 2015 International Engine of the Year awards, including the overall winner, BMW’s 1.5-liter three-cylinder that powers the i8, which uses the company’s wear-resistant IROX bearings, designed to reduce wear in hybrid and stop/start engine designs.
Federal-Mogul supplies parts for the motors from Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Ford, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG and PSA Peugeot Citroën, including pistons, rings, bearings, bushings, valves and valve seats, sealings and gaskets as well as ignition and system protection products it has developed in-house.
“We are very familiar with the criteria used by the judges in selecting the winning engines because they are core to our design and development process,” explained Federal-Mogul Powertrain CTO Gian Maria Olivetti. “Our engineers are at the forefront of advanced powertrain component technology and work continuously with customers to provide products that meet their requirements for improved fuel economy and emissions together with even higher levels of performance. We congratulate the winners of this prestigious award many of whom are our customers which recognizes the very best in advanced engine technology.”
Federal-Mogul also worked closely with PSA Peugeot Citroën on its three-cylinder turbocharged 1.2-liter EB2DT PureTech engine, which won the 1- to 1.4-liter category and finished a close third in the overall ranking. The PureTech unit employs components including pistons, piston rings (with Carboglide top ring and LKZ oil ring), hybrid liners, cylinder head gaskets, sliding bearings, valves (intake and hollow exhaust) and valve seats a number of which can be seen in the short film produced by the French car manufacturer to promote its engine.
