The new facility is the fourth such center that the company has opened in China, and marks a key investment for the firm as the Chinese government pushes heavily for increased fuel efficiency and reduced emissions levels from vehicles manufactured and sold in the country.
The Chengdu factory will focus on low friction diamond-like carbon coatings for clean technology automotive applications developed by regional manufacturers, including turbos and injection systems.
Ionbond says that its new factory will put it in a good position to capitalize on Chinese OEMs looking to compete in the global market and pushing for higher fuel efficiency from their vehicles. The company says that as engines are increasingly downsized, the pressure on components from higher friction and increased temperatures means that manufacturers are increasingly looking to innovations in coatings and similar areas to provide the capacity for higher surface loads and lower wear on components.
