Mercedes-AMG has announced that it is starting assembly of its 12-cylinder engines at a new location at Daimler’s facility in Mannheim.
The company said that its ‘one man, one engine’ philosophy of each AMG engine fitter assembling a complete engine by hand will still be adhered to, but demand is such that expansion is required.
The 12-cylinder assembly area at AMG headquarters in Affalterbach will be closed and existing employees moved to the eight-cylinder production line that will be expanded to fill the vacated space.
Mercedes-AMG said that it will use available capacities at the Daimler site in Mannheim to expand its engine production and that assembly of its V12 biturbo engines will start in February 2016.
“Supplying our customers as fast as possible is highly important to us. We do not have any possibilities for expansion in Affalterbach at present,” said Tobias Moers, Mercedes-AMG management board chairman. “So we have decided to transfer the assembly of the 12-cylinder engines to the Daimler site in Mannheim.”
The new engine assembly site in Mannheim will see an existing area redeveloped for the AMG workers, to adapt to the logistics and ergonomics that are required with the one man, one engine rule. AMG applies the principle to its V8 engine assembly in Affalterbach and four-cylinder assembly at its other site in Kölleda, Thüringen.
Each AMG engine fitter vouches for the quality of their engine by fixing a plate to the assembled unit with their signature on it.
