To mark the launch of its new 3.9-liter V8-engined 488 Spider, Ferrari has released a video giving a glimpse behind the scenes at its assembly facility in Maranello.
The new car was launched at the IAA in Frankfurt, Germany, and Ferrari says it is the most high-performance open-topped car it has ever produced. The turbocharged engine puts out 670ps and a maximum torque of 760Nm at 3,000rpm, accelerating to 100km/h from a standstill in 3 seconds and to 200km/h in 8.7 seconds.
Ferrari says it has all but eliminated turbo lag, with a throttle response time of 0.8 seconds, thanks to turbos on ball-bearing-mounted shafts, compressor wheels in TiAl, a low-density titanium-aluminum alloy and twin-scroll turbines designed and built to maximize power. The flat-plane crankshaft and equal length tubing on the exhaust system contribute to a distinctive Ferrari engine sound that the company describes as “seductive, but never invasive”.
