James Hobday, business development director, Emissions Analytics, has discussed the importance of new regulations at the Path Towards Euro 7 Conference at Engine Expo + The Powertrain Technology Show.
“The reason that we need Euro 7 is that Euro 6 in real terms just didn’t deliver as it might have done. The manufacturers haven’t done anything wrong by the way, the regulations just allow them to do this. It’s a failed regulation, unfortunately,” noted Hobday.
The Emissions Analytics presentation, which was led by Hobday, looked into the importance of the next stage of emissions regulations. This went into the differences between real-world nitrogen oxide emissions levels at different stages within Euro 6 and the latest results from vehicles certified according to real driving emissions (RDE).
The need to resolve the differential treatment of different powertrain types was also analyzed, as was the fuel economy and CO2 performance of recently certified vehicles, showing the gap between WLTP and real-world values in comparison with the fidelity of US fuel economy and emissions labels.
“We have tested over 2,000 passenger cars. The data I am showing you is based on our independent testing program,” said Hobday. “What we do, in simple terms, is rent cars and test them on a cycle that we have developed, a cycle that we can use to make accurate comparisons.”
