Automotive consulting company AVL has revealed plans to develop four new battery testing facilities, covering an area of 400m2. The development will further expand the Austrian company’s electric mobility testing center and enhance its large-scale battery development capabilities.
The move by AVL is in response to what it cites as ‘ever-increasing industrial requirements’, and will take in a variety of new equipment and protocols. The company’s state-of-the-art testbeds will enable the development of batteries up to 1,200V whilst additionally, the thermal chamber, which measures 4.5 x 3.3m, will be able to test truck batteries.
While AVL began lithium battery development for passenger cars 10 years ago, the new larger test chambers will enable higher test parameters for voltage, power and temperature-changing speed than previously possible.
AVL is currently developing new technologies to support the optimal integration of all cell types. To address battery validation, the company previously introduced four battery testbeds with 800-1000V-capabilities back in 2010. Two years later, the company implemented its first 800V BEV – the concept vehicle for large-scale BEV battery technologies, which are to hit the market in the next few years.
