BorgWarner has outlined plans to supply its high voltage hairpin (HVH) 410 electric motor to Scania for use in the new Citywide hybrid bus.
The vehicle, which is designed for urban areas, will feature the electric motor between the clutch and gearbox in a P2 layout, with the 650V motor driving the vehicle at low speeds. Thanks to the parts supplier’s innovation, the motor will also charge the battery by generating power from braking and driving downhill.
As emissions become a more prominent issue in the automotive industry, Scania’s introduction of the HVH motor means that the Citywide bus will be able to operate in both zero-emission and noise-sensitive zones.
The motor, which is available either fully housed or as a rotor assembly, features patented HVH stator winding technology, and can produce 2000Nm of torque as well as a power output of up to 407ps. All at a peak efficiency of over 95%.
While American company’s newest electric motor will feature predominantly in Scania’s hybrid bus, the component also utilizes customizable stack length, cooling and winding configurations to easily integrate into most electric and hybrid applications.
Stefan Demmerle, president, BorgWarner, has suggested the company’s product line will include more emission reducing components: “This application expands our comprehensive hybrid and electric product portfolio and reinforces our strong reputation as a global leader in clean and efficient technology solutions for combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles.”
