Delphi Technologies has started volume production of a new silicon carbide inverter. The inverter enables use of electrical systems up to 800V, significantly extending EV range and halving charging times compared with typical 400V systems.
The technology, which supports multi-voltage platforms, is an evolution of the company’s proven high-voltage inverter. Delphi’s inverter uses state-of-the-art silicon carbide MOSFET semiconductors.
“Doubling the voltage from today’s 400V systems brings a substantial range of benefits, both for the vehicle user and for the vehicle manufacturer,” explained Richard Dauch, CEO for Delphi Technologies. “We have designed this technology to simplify vehicle manufacturers’ multi-voltage strategy as they extend their electric and hybrid vehicle ranges.”
The company recently secured a US$2.7bn contract for volume production of this technology over eight years with a global OEM. Launch is expected in 2022, initially in a high-performance vehicle.
