Under the new partnership, the two companies are to jointly develop and manufacture advanced motors for electric vehicles. The joint venture will be based in Japan and will also have subsidiaries in the USA and China, each with manufacturing and sales capabilities.
It is hoped the collaboration will generate technological synergy and economies of scale that will strengthen the competitive advantage of both companies.
Hitachi Automotive Systems develops high-output, lightweight and compact electric vehicle motors, which it supplies to vehicle manufacturers in Japan and around the world. The company will continue to supply other automotive OEMs while Honda will also use its in-house-manufactured motors.
