IPG Automotive has developed an all-new simulator for emissions testing as automakers prepare for RDE. New emissions testing regulation RDE will come into effect this month, as the EU aims to ensure pollutants are being measured under real world conditions.
IPG has introduced CarMaker 6.0, which allows for realistic and reproducible measurements early in vehicle development through virtual test driving. This means that automakers are able reduce the need for real on-road tests.
From September regulations will mean that any vehicle must not exceed emissions of 60 or 80 milligrams of nitrogen oxides per km, for petrol and diesel respectively.
Carmaker 6.0 enables manufacturers to test consumption and emissions in various scenarios using the test bench. A route around Karlsruhe, Germany is already featured in the programme, but the software has the possibility to import other international routes.
Jochen Petters, business development manager at IPG, feels that the software will benefit manufacturers in the development phase of vehicle design. “Real RDE tests can be reduced significantly which, for vehicle development, primarily entails high cost efficiency.
“Additionally, tests with significantly more individuality and flexibility under constant and therefore more comparable real conditions and influences become possible in the simulation.”
