Tier 1 supplier Magna Powertrain has designed an all-new dual-clutch transmission (DCT) for BMW as the OEM attempts to fall in line with stricter emissions legislation. The DCT will be used in the auto maker’s large-volume transverse (UKL) vehicle platform.
The third-generation DCT, the Getrag 7DCT300, is lighter than its predecessor, while also providing better fuel consumption and more dynamic shifts. Additionally, on-demand actuation means only 30W of the total vehicle consumption is required in the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle).
“Reducing CO₂ emissions is becoming more important in the global automotive market,” said Swamy Kotagiri, president at Magna.
“Our highly efficient DCT technology is one of the solutions to address that concern. With our electrified hybrid transmissions, our eDrive portfolio, and our powertrain system integration ability, we are in a perfect position to support our customers in achieving their CO₂ emissions goals.”
Magna’s dual-clutch transmission allows for the inclusion of a compact electric motor within the transmission housing, meaning no impact on the installation length of the transmission.
The power of the electric motor can be scaled for various applications from a 48V mild-hybrid to a plug-in hybrid. BMW Group’s UKL platform is used in the BMW X1, 1 Series and 2 Series tourer.
