The first electric powertrain has been shipped from BMW Group‘s Plant Steyr in Austria to Debrecen in Hungary to be used in Neue Klasse test vehicles. This milestone en route to series production follows BMW’s installation of new halls for e-drive production at the facility in Steyr back in February 2024.
“Our plant in Steyr has been delivering the first sixth-generation electric engines to the development department in Munich since September. We also recently began sending our e-engines directly to BMW Group Plant Debrecen, where they are being installed in test vehicles,” explained Klaus von Moltke, SVP of engine production at BMW and managing director of BMW Group Plant Steyr.
The Neue Klasse is the company’s upcoming range of EVs that are built from the ground up. Plant Steyr launched production of the first next-generation electric motors three months ago.
Helmut Hochsteiner, VP of electric engine production at BMW Group Plant Steyr, said, “Over the coming months, we will continue to validate and optimize the complex production process for the new electric motors.”
The Steyr plant is BMW Group’s largest engine plant in the world and has a workforce of 4,700 employees.
