BMW’s Hams Hall engine plant, near Birmingham in the UK, is gearing up to produce more 1.5-liter three-cylinder engines, to cope with the demand created by the recently launched roadster version of the i8 hybrid sports car. It is also preparing for an upcoming version of the coupe.
The plant produces BMW’s three- and four-cylinder engines, which includes the B38A15T0 turbocharged three-cylinder that is specific to the i8. The engine produces 228bhp and 320Nm and is assisted by an electric motor, resulting in a system output of 369bhp.
The engine for the i8, which was named International Engine of the Year in 2015, is assembled exclusively in Hams Hall by a selected team in a dedicated facility that has been recently expanded and enhanced to increase production capability for further high-spec engines.
