Ultium Cells, a joint venture between General Motors and LG Chem, has started ground work on the site of its battery-cell manufacturing facility in Lordstown, Ohio, USA. The company will invest US$2.3bn in mass-producing battery cells for automobiles, creating more than 1,100 jobs.
The collaboration includes a joint development agreement to bring together experts in battery science to produce advanced battery technologies to reduce battery costs.
General Motors says production work on future EV and AV products continue despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The US giant says the Cruise Origin, which was revealed in San Francisco earlier this year, will be delivered on schedule, while production timing remains on track for the yet-to-be-revealed Cadillac Lyriq and GMC HUMMER EV. All of these cars will powered by the Ultium battery system.
