A whitepaper titled Designing the Future of Fuel Cells has been released by Hyzon Motors – a supplier of zero-emission heavy-duty fuel cell electric vehicles – which details the development of its single stack 200kW fuel cell system.
To date, many OEMs have chosen to partner two sets of 90kW-150kW fuel cell systems to meet the power requirements of commercial vehicles. Hyzon, however, has developed a 200kW fuel cell system which features a single stack capable of generating enough electricity to meet the power needs of heavy-duty transportation.
The company’s single stack is stated to provide a multitude of benefits compared to conventional systems which combine two ~100kW fuel cell systems. These include a 30% reduction in total volume, a 25% reduction in total fuel cell system manufacturing costs, a 30% reduction in total weight and a 20% increase in miles driven per kg of hydrogen (compared to test data from the 120kW truck. Early stage testing of the 200kW truck at a test track using similar payload and route simulations on a flat road).
