Ram has announced that its 2020 1500 truck will be fitted with the third generation of its turbocharged 3-liter EcoDiesel V6. Thanks to the updated powerplant, the 1500 will develop 650Nm of torque at 1,600rpm and 263ps at 3,600rpm.
Equipped with a new-generation water-cooled turbocharger with variable geometry turbine, the system is designed to increase efficiency and responsiveness during transient conditions.
In addition, the engine has redesigned cylinder head intake ports to improve swirl and flow, the exhaust gas recirculation system design has been updated to a dual-loop system, and an added low-pressure circulation system draws gases after the diesel particulate filter, thus minimizing turbocharger energy losses.
The compression ratio has also been optimized from 16.0:1 from 16.5:1, while redesigned 29,000psi direct-injection fuel injector nozzles match the newly designed and optimized combustion chamber.
For the Ram 1500, the V6’s lightweight aluminum alloy pistons were completely redesigned to include thinner rings and low-friction coating on the pin and side skirts to reduce losses. NVH has also been reduced by offsetting the piston pin by 0.3mm from the centreline.
