Aston Martin has revealed details of its new V6 engine, designed and developed in-house for use in a range of mid-engine sports cars beginning with the Valhalla’s release in 2022.
Named after one of Aston Martin’s famous engineers, Tadek Marek, who worked for the company during the 1950s and 1960s, the TM01 has so far undergone extensive testing on the dyno, as the brand pushes toward creating its first in-house designed engine since 1968.
The 3-liter turbocharged V6 will form part of an electrified powertrain. As such, alongside the new engine, Aston Martin has been developing a series of new hybrid systems to ensure the complete unit will be the most powerful in the range when it becomes available. Final power and torque figures will be confirmed for each application at the time of their prospective launches.
Following on from Aston Martin’s mid-engine hypercar, the Valkyrie, many key aspects have been applied to the TM01 along with the decision to develop the engine with a hot V structure, allowing the engine architecture to stay compact and weigh less than 200kg (440 lb).
To guarantee the lowest center of gravity, the engine will be positioned behind the cockpit and be fitted with a dry sump to deliver efficient lubrication during high-speed cornering. At present, the powertrain is designed to meet all the current requirements for the Euro 7 emissions legislation.
