Chevrolet has revealed that the 2020 Silverado HD will be given a new 6.6-liter V8 powerplant. The gasoline direct injection engine is built on a cast-iron small block and features aluminum heads. The unit will deliver 406ps and 630Nm of torque.
The ability to deliver fuel more precisely enables a higher compression ratio of 10.8:1 with strong performance at low RPM. The system also features a forged steel crankshaft, forged powder-metal connecting rods and additional high-strength components.
Chevrolet’s 6.6-liter also features a longer stroke than its predecessor, the 6.0L V8. The new gasoline engine will be offered with dual alternators to support increased electrical needs required for trailering and snowplowing. The unit is paired with the 6L90 6-speed automatic transmission.
The proven Duramax 6.6-liter turbo diesel unit and Allison 10-speed transmission will also be fitted to the 2020 Silverado.
“For 2020, we made the combination even better and upgraded nearly every driveline component. As a result, we will deliver all 910 lb-ft (1230Nm) of torque to the ground in first gear.”
A diesel after-run feature specifically for use following a demanding towing situation is an additional new technology for the Duramax engine. The after-run allows the engine to keep running for up to 15 minutes, enabling it to cool down using the fan and circulating coolant.
Allison’s new 10-speed automatic transmission is combined with improved driveline components to better transfer torque. The system also supports smart engine braking, which can help reduce brake wear.
The combination’s standard axle ratio has been lowered to 3.42:1, which reduces engine speed, therefore enhancing refinement.
