Described by the Italian OEM as a complete evolution of its previous turbo unit, the 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 promises to propel the 488 Pista to 100km/h in 2.9 seconds
Ferrari has unveiled its new 488 Pista. The successor to Ferrari’s V8-engined special series – the 360 Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia and 458 Speciale – and owner of the most powerful V8 engine ever created by the Italian OEM will make its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show next week on March 6.
Developed to offer more power and less weight, the 488 Pista’s turbocharged 3.9-liter engine promises 720ps at 8,000rpm and 730Nm of torque at 3,000rpm in seventh gear. This means a 2.9 second 0-100km/h and 0-200km/h in just 7.6 seconds. While the top speed is 340km/h.
The car’s development has evolved directly from the company’s involvement in the FIA World Endurance Championship – where it has won five Manufacturers’ titles in the GTE class in the six years since the series’s inception, taking 29 out of 50 races – and 25 years’ experience in running the Ferrari Challenge one-make series.
A lot of the Pista’s performance characteristics come from extensive weight saving solutions. When compared to the 488 GTB, the new model weighs 90kg less. A dry weight of 1280kg combined with the largest ever increase in engine power for a special series car results in a new benchmark for Ferrari’s V8 sports cars.
