General Motors has introduced a new Duramax 3-liter diesel engine. Developed from a clean sheet in collaboration with FEV, the six-cylinder engine offers improved fuel economy and refinement, while complying with the latest emission limits.
Designed specifically for the full-size GM truck platform, the engine has a peak output of 277ps and 624Nm of torque. The all-aluminum unit will be installed in the next generation of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup vehicles.
“The result is something to be proud of,” said Prof. Stefan Pischinger, CEO and president of the FEV Group. “The new Duramax engine fulfills the criteria demanded by customers in an impressive way. At the same time, it has very low fuel consumption values in its market segment.”
The extensive usage of advanced methods during development enabled the completion of the project in a compressed timeframe. The result is an in-line engine design that is unique in this vehicle segment, which is dominated by V-engine designs.
The in-line engine design aids emissions reduction and fuel consumption, as it enables a close-coupled and thereby effective exhaust aftertreatment system as well as minimized engine friction.
The all-new Duramax 3-liter engine is being produced in the new GM plant in Flint, Michigan.
