Mercedes-AMG has unveiled its newly developed M 139 engine. Generating 426ps, the 2-liter unit is the world’s most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder in series production. Exceeding the M 133 by 41ps.
The maximum torque has also increased from 475Nm up to 500Nm. The four-cylinder will be available in two output versions, the 426ps S-model and 392ps in the basic version.
With response in mind, the torque curve was carefully balanced. The peak torque of 500Nm is available in a range of 5000-5250rpm. With this configuration, the AMG engineers have achieved a power delivery similar to that of a naturally aspirated engine.
The engine developers were also able to realize a dynamically increasing torque curve in the lower engine speed range, thereby improving agility. The increasing torque at higher RPM makes the engine more free-revving. Moreover, AMG has given the M 139 a high maximum engine speed of up to 7200rpm.
“We already set the benchmark in the segment with the preceding engine. This fundamentally new four-cylinder presented us with the challenge of doing even better, and we succeeded with a number of sometimes revolutionary solutions,” said Tobias Moers, chairman of Mercedes-AMG.
