Mercedes-Benz has introduced its new X-Class at the Geneva Motor Show. With a six-cylinder engine and 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, the X 350 d 4MATIC promises 260ps and maximum torque of 550Nm.
Equipped with a 260ps 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine with common-rail direct injection, the X 350 d will reach 100km/h in 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 204km/h. Maximum torque is available over an engine speed range of 1,400 to 3,200rpm. This means that high torque is available from low engine speeds.
Developed to be lightweight, the engine features a single-stage turbocharger with variable turbine geometry and the Nanoslide cylinder liner coating that first featured in Formula 1. It is fitted with a 7G-TRONIC Plus automatic transmission, and the OEM claims gearchanges will happen without interruption in tractive power.
Thanks to 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive with low-range reduction gear and an optional rear axle locking differential, the Mercedes pickup features a two-stage transfer case that is flange-mounted to the 7G-TRONIC Plus main transmission. It is fitted with a central differential of planetary design that distributes the drive force between the front and rear axle with a fixed torque distribution of 40:60%.
To ensure maximum traction potential of all four wheels, the AWD system includes a continuously adjustable longitudinal differential in the transfer case, in the form of an electromechanical multiplate clutch.
