Williams has chosen to fit the FW-EVX with the all-new Xtrac P1166, as development of the high-performance modular platform concept continues.
The all-new integrated lightweight EV transmission system is fully integrated with Yasa P400 motor-generator and meets the lightweight and tight packaging requirement for front axle. This is used in combination with the 2016 P1227 transmission, with torque vectoring capabilities, on the rear axle.
The 17-20kg P1166 represents high-power density, with a max speed of over 10,000rpm and peak torque of 1,000Nm. In combination with the three Yasa P400 series, the Williams FW-EVX platform will develop 648ps.
With the P1166 featuring a bevel gear set and differential, the P1227 features a transverse motor installation with helical gears that can accommodate single or dual motor inputs and be configured as a differential or with torque vectoring capability. Xtrac has reengineered both transmissions for optimal road-going refinement and durability.
Xtrac claims the continual development of its driveline systems for a rapidly expanding market of supercars and hypercars, will provide valuable insights into designing efficient transmissions for mass market road-going EVs.
James Setter, head of automotive and engineering at Xtrac, is looking to transfer expertise from this deal into mass-market EVs.
“There is significant intellectual property to be gleaned from these advanced automotive technology development programs; not least being the pursuit of silent drivetrains, where we’re focusing significant effort,” Setter said.
“When you remove the internal combustion engine it reveals the slightest transmission noise, vibration and harshness.”
“By developing a whole family of EV transmissions for two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive applications, we can provide solutions for numerous possibilities,” Setter added.
“Either transmission can fit a front or rear axle. It’s all about flexibility in the package to meet customer requirements.”
