The Frankfurt reveal of the new Audi S4 has introduced a new 3-liter V6 engine to the A4 range.
The sporting S-models will exclusively feature the newly developed V6 engine with direct injection and turbocharging. The turbo is a new addition compared with the previous-generation model, which had a supercharger.
The output of the TFSI motor is increased by 20PS to 354PS and there’s 500Nm torque available between 1,300 and 4,500rpm, a 60Nm increase on the old car.
Performance is suitably brisk, accelerating to 100km/h in 4.7 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h (155mph). Audi says that despite the impressive performance, the V6 engine is still efficient, returning 7.39 l/100km (38.1mpg) and 170g/km CO2 on the NEDC test.
A self-locking differential sends 60% of the engine’s power to the rear axle and 40% to the front, but can send up to 70% of all power to the front axle and up to 85% to the rear to achieve best traction.
A more extreme RS4 model is expected in 2017.
