AVL is championing its ‘Series Battery Benchmarking package’, which it offers to OEMs in order for them to quickly and easily access globally relevant battery trends. In collecting more than 240 benchmark criteria, development targets can be pointed out quickly, and future projects supported.
In AVL’s benchmark package, battery attribute ratings are defined and derived transparently. In doing so, a comprehensive overview of a product’s or company’s position on the market is provided. Therefore, through a well-defined benchmarking process, OEM’s can get easily comparable battery attributes for a reasonable budget.
For OEMs, the collection of technical information about competitor batteries in electrified vehicles on the market as well as the in-depth analysis of development requirements is a costly and time-consuming operation. It requires a structured and methodical approach to derive and obtain the right information that helps simplifying future projects. AVL’s comprehensive Series Battery Benchmarking package provides OEMs with the necessary information on competitors. During the benchmarking process, more than 240 criteria are collected and assessed so as to support current or future development programs.
AVL states that in a typical project, vehicle measurements are firstly undertaken to analyze the operation strategy and control systems. This is followed by placing the battery on the testbed and examining its thermal, electrical and mechanical subsystems. During the battery tear down, the module safety, cell life and overall cost structure are analyzed and assessed based on a detailed specification list.
AVL benchmarks two to four vehicle batteries per year. Through its easy access to deep knowledge on battery technologies AVL is able to provide OEMs with valuable information on future xEV strategies.
AVL is the world’s largest independent company for the development, simulation and testing technology of powertrains (hybrid, combustion engines, transmission, electric drive, batteries and software) for passenger cars, trucks and large engines. AVL has more than 8,050 employees all over the world. In 2015, sales revenues reached €1.27bn (US$1.40).
