BorgWarner has revealed the range of technologies it has supplied to General Motors for the firm’s new 8-speed automatic transmission.
The company has supplied its Eco-Launch stop/start accumulator technology and multi-segment wet friction plates to GM for its 8L45 rear-wheel drive transmission unit.
To enable quick restarting when the stop/start is in action, BorgWarner says that its accumulator and Eco-Launch solenoid valve re-prime the transmission in less than 0.3 seconds, the time it takes the driver to switch from the brake to the accelerator.
The company also says that its multi-segment wet friction plate technology features full-depth grooves cut between segments of proprietary friction material to reduce drag and provide durability. The groove patterns and material are engineered for each specific application.
Overall, the company says the GM auto transmission offers a fuel economy improvement of up to 5% compared with similar 6-speed transmissions, thanks to such innovations.
