Specialist supplier ContiTech is showcasing its latest developments in natural rubber with vehicle components made from dandelions.
The company says that the innovation is aimed at making car manufacture more sustainable, and plans to use the rubber from the roots of the dandelion plant for vibration and mounting elements, and is already experimenting with the material in its tire division.
According to ContiTech, using natural rubber from dandelions means that the material can be sourced from colder areas and doesn’t need to be transported around the world.
“The initial test results are very promising,” said Dr Anna Misiun, who leads the research activities on natural rubber from dandelion roots at ContiTech Vibration Control. “One of the biggest challenges will be obtaining the material on an industrial scale.”
