Magneti Marelli has opened a new factory in India to produce robotized manual transmissions.
The 7,500m² plant near New Delhi will be run by the Italian company’s joint venture with Suzuki and will have a capacity of 280,000 kits per year.
The AMT units from the company are intended to be low-cost and simple, combining a simple manual transmission with an electro-hydraulic add-on device managed by an ECU.
The company says that the strong demand for the transmissions in the Indian market – the Alto and Celerio models from Maruti and the Tata Nano are fitted with the gearbox – has driven the construction of the new plant.
The new factory is Magneti Marelli’s seventh in India, covering the production of components from powertrain and electronics to suspension.
