Audi’s 2.5-liter TFSI has become a regular feature in the International Engine of Year Awards, claiming the 2.0-liter to 2.5-liter crown six successive times.
For the 2016-specification Audi TT RS, the manufacturer has developed the five-cylinder engine in ‘all areas’, resulting in a lighter yet more powerful unit. Lightweight construction measures have been used across the engine, with revised material choices in a number of areas. Audi is also claiming a reduction in internal friction in combination with an improved power delivery.
Despite these changes, the engine retains its 2,480cc capacity. Performance is a claimed ‘17%’ better, with peak power of 294kW (400hp), and maximum torque of 480Nm (354 lb-ft) available between 1,700rpm and 5,850 rpm.
The allows the all-new TT RS Coupé to accelerate from 0km/h to 100km/h (0 to 62.1mph) in 3.7s, and 3.9s for the Roadster. Audi regulates the top speed at 250km/h (155.3mph), or at 280km/h (173.9mph) upon request.
