Engine valves and aluminum die castings are two of Rane’s product lines in focus at Engine Expo North America at booth E266. The company is displaying its range of hollow and sodium-cooled engine valves, which offer not only a weight reduction of up to 7%, but also efficient thermal conduction that reduces engine temperatures by 150°C, enabling designers to push the limits of engine performance to meet even the most stringent fuel efficiency and future emissions norms.
Surface treatment option innovations will also be on show – Rane has perfected its understanding of material response to varying engine conditions, and has developed a comprehensive database of process failure modes. This enables it to provide solutions to address problems customers have yet to anticipate. Rane has applied its knowledge of hard-facing to smaller-stem-diameter engine valves with high end-hardness of greater than 60HRC, showing zero valve end-wear and applicable for high-speed engines.
Further improvements have been implemented to reduce end-wear through the application of carbon-based surface treatments, which enable almost infinite life of the tappet end of the valve. The carbon-based surface treatment has been replicated in Rane’s tappet parts to provide a better finish, resulting in a decrease in friction of up to 40%. The tappets also benefit from the company’s latest hard-facing processes, which give almost infinite tappet life for heavy-duty vehicles in the MHCV segment.
