Toyota is celebrating eight million sales of its hybrid powertrains worldwide, 18 years since the company’s technology first went on the market.
Sales began with the Prius in 1997, but now the Toyota hybrid range includes 30 cars sold in 90 markets around the world. To demonstrate the growth in popularity of hybridized cars, the Japanese manufacturer says it only passed the seven million sales mark 10 months ago.
Toyota estimates that its hybrid vehicles have saved around 58 million tons of CO2 emissions, compared with the same number of petrol-powered vehicles. It also estimates its hybrids have saved 22 million kiloliters of fuel.
The newest addition to the company’s line-up of hybrid electric vehicles is the recently announced RAV4 hybrid.
