Volkswagen is launching its EA211 1.4-liter TSI motor in the USA, extending its downsizing strategy across all models in that market and taking advantage of the general trend in the region towards smaller engines.
The new power unit will appear in the Jetta small family car, replacing the 2-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder base model engine that can be traced back to the third-generation Golf, as well as the newer 1.8-liter TSI from the SE-spec Jetta.
The EA211 engine features lightweight aluminum construction, an integrated exhaust manifold and a toothed-belt drive for its double overhead camshaft valvetrain that incorporates variable intake and exhaust timing.
The 1.4 was developed alongside the MQB platform to offer flexible installations, including a twincharger setup. The engine being installed in the Jetta features a 10:1 compression ratio, direct fuel injection and turbocharging to produce 150ps at 5,000rpm and 249Nm of torque at 1,400rpm.
The Jetta will be the first US application of the 1.4TSI, but it is expected to make an appearance in the Golf compact soon.
